Front Cover Experimentation // Crit

For the front cover of the LookBook, Freya decided to use one of images that she was not including in her final 12 piece design which I suggested as she has a lot of good images and looking at all of them I suggested the one that is used. I suggested this one to Freya as I thought it was a strong image for the cover. .And as my previous cover research has suggested the main focus should be on the model that is on the cover. I believed this to be the strongest image as it is primarily a shoe campaign so that aspect should be focused on and it is a striking and strong imageI started with this image and the DAZED logo and also some type to represent the fact that the Look-book was a collaboration between Kenzo and Dr Marten.

I also decided that because this is not a 'DAZED' magazine, instead of it is a Look-Book that would come alongside the magazine as a small feature. Due to this fact I decided to call it 'DAZED INTRODUCED'. As I thought it could be something like an introduction for young artists who want to get their work out there. Hypothetically if this was the case then Freya here would be introduced to all the DAZED readers.

I initially started to look at the layout of each component and where they would look best placed. My main focus was on the collaboration aspect. The X here representing the collaboration aspect to combine the two together, and decided to play around with this further.

After playing around with that aspect of the front cover I decided to look at the front cover and how that could be improved. To do so I decided to look at my cover research and how they have been created. I then further experimented with the layout so there was something that I could gather feedback initially from peers and then I could take back to another meeting with Freya to see what her thoughts are.

I then sent this image to some of my peers to gather some feedback and to see what they would do to change / better the front cover. The most common favourite was the bottom second from the right. and the top right one. The most favourite was the bottom second from the right due to aspects such as the mixture of background and foreground, and the 'DAZED' is halfway through the white and blue. However one of my peers suggested that if it is a front cover (which it is) then the DAZED logo does not stand out as much as it possibly should for a cover page.

I thought the best thing to do was to develop both of those to see if I could make them into one. I thought I could try to merge the two into one to create a good balance. To do so I will further experiment by trying out changing the KENZO DR MARTEN writing to white / red to give the same sort of effect that that is it the most liked cover design.

Final Outcome

Producing the final outcome wiht kitty was good fun, however due to the client being late with the images I had to help kitty with the production. We ended up with an outcome that all three parties were happy with!

The Making Process

Before we could begin making the booklet I decided to print out three different copies so that we had room for error and we could also do a test booklet before we print the final one.

We decided the best way to create the pristine and professional look in order to produce the booklet to the high standards we know we can reach.
Here Katherine and I are measuring in order to glue together each piece of paper to create the concertina layout.

Here I am measuring the added sections for the tabs that I created in the InDesign document.

Katherine here is measuring the correct centre meters so that all of our pages are the same and slick.
Here I am gluing together two of the pages for the concertina layout.

Below are images of Katherine working out how and where she would need to cut the grey board in order to create the hard back cover.

Magazine Research (covers)

Looking at all the covers above I found that the ones that stood out to me are very much based on the image of the model / person on the front cover. They are focusing on them and that is the main aspect of the cover that they are telling their audience to look at. The DAZED and PAPER magazines both have more of a subtle background, usually being one colour or simple back drop. I think this is more effective in what they are trying to achieve and I prefer them to ones like CULTURED as there is a lot more going on in those covers and that is then drawing the attention away from the main aspect of the cover.
