Background Research Dr Martens

From its first appearance in 1959 to 2018, the Dr Martens boot has become a staple fashion product, belonging to a large number of the public for many years. After the invention of the boot in the late 50’s, sales boomed, and the shoe industry saw a huge change in style and look. Becoming an everlasting iconic product was not why these shoes were invented however; they were originally created as a means of stable footwear for men in the work place.

The popularity of the boots completely took over Britain and Dr Marten’s became the trendiest type of shoe to purchase. Everyone was buying these shoes; from goths and punks in the 1970-80’s, grunge fanatics in the 80’s and then onto the indie pop movements from the 90’s to 2000’s. The variety of the people wearing Dr Martens has proven that the brand has managed to almost take over the shoe industry.

Dr Marten is now well known for its many collaborations with other brands, not specifically clothing as well. Brands such as Lazy Oaf, Supreme and the band Joy Division, have been able to take full advantage of the unique style that the shoe company has to offer. These collaborations have produced many different styles of boots that are now worn by the streets of not only Britain, but the whole world.

Dr Marten has gathered many styles, due to the vast array of people wearing them. As previously mentioned, the different fashion movements that were present in the 20th Century completely rediscovered Dr Marten boots as a fashion product, and not just a workwear boot.

People associate Dr Marten with a grunge style nowadays, however a lot of people that wear the boots don’t wear them to conform to that style. They were them for pure comfort, and for the pleasure.

Above I have gathered some images of the brands style when it was first created and the brands style now. You can see the huge difference and how much of a huge fashion brand they are now. In comparison to back when they were first becoming worn and getting bigger through musicians.
