Wonder provides a journey through school of the main
character, August. The novel tells us about his struggle with having a
deformity whilst showing the growth he gains from going to school. It shows us
that nothing is centred around one person, the shift in viewpoints causes the
reader to see it from all angles.
August in the astronaut helmet is representing the initial
stages of the book where he was hiding his deformity, but we learn through the
book that the mask is not needed and that august is now growing up.
Wonder revolves around August, but this cover is showing the
audience that there is much more beyond his viewpoint. It is suggesting to the
readers that there is a bigger picture. There are six balloons to represent the
six different viewpoints that are portrayed throughout this book.
The back page of the book cover was simple in order to keep
the attention focused on the front. A darker background colour was chosen to
represent the universe but also to make the planet balloon illustrations stand
out on the page.
The timeframe for this brief was a month, which was
completed with ease due to previous experience with this competition brief.
The brief stated that this book cover must appeal to the
widest audience, capturing the children to purchase the book however alongside
this the cover should encourage and engage with adults who would purchase it
for the children. This resulted in a target audience that was varied which was
more challenging to design for as the largest demographic had to be appealed
to.
